Lenten Message 2017

As Bishop Robert Barron points out, many presume that the biggest celebration on the Christian Calendar is Christmas, but for Christians, the even greater celebration is Easter. Without Easter, without the Resurrection, we would not have the gift of salvation. Jesus had to rise from the dead or else he would have just been another failed Messiah and his birth would be a forgotten footnote of history.

That’s why Lent is such an important time of year for us as Christians. It is the period during which we refocus on the passion and death of Jesus so that we will be ready to embrace the good news of the Resurrection at Easter.

So, as we begin with Ash Wednesday and its reminder of repentance, let us resolve to follow Jesus, the one who spent 40 days of temptation in the wilderness, to both prepare for his messianic ministry and to prove his messianic credentials. And we do this knowing that it is not only the destination, but also the journey itself that will transform us into the likeness of Christ.

Lenten Blessings, Rev’d Lyndon Mulholland.
